Measurement accuracy, precision and Pseudo Science

Image
Measurement accuracy, precision and Pseudo Science Looks like I spent way too much time these days related to my experience in a recent incident . Let's move on and come back to the focus of my blog, i.e. use critical thinking to debunk pseudo science claim How many people can tell the difference between accuracy and precision? I bet if you are into gun, you would probably know it for sure .  Look at the below graph: It should tell you what are the difference between accuracy and precision.  I bet that the understanding of the difference between accuracy and precision is so basic for any scientist/engineer. I was proven to be wrong again (thanks to various "audio science" forums and they are really eye-opening for me to see something I didn't see before). A lot of "scientist/engineer" can't tell the difference. "Precision part":  two DACs are measured to have very high SINAD. People in the "audio science" forums would call these two ...

Galileo, Control of Free Speech, and pseudo science in 2024

Image
Galileo, Control of Free Speech, and pseudo science in 2024 Free speech is an universal right but there are still many places such right is a rarity even in 2024. One of such places is known as "audio science forums". Do we still remember the story of Galileo? I just saw the following article:  Four centuries after Galileo was silenced, UK students are still curbing free speech (theconversation.com) In the above article, it mentioned "no platform". Galileo faced the "no platform" issue; some students also faced the same issue. No platform? Whenever you attempt to speak a truth that is incompatible with the believes of the "audio science community" (aka cult community ), you will be bullied and attacked first, then put on control of free speech, and finally be silenced/vanished completely. (I already blogged a lot of my experiences for the last two months. Feel free to check it out  as I don't bother to list them one by one here) It is almost...

Debunking "the Monty's video" (Part 2)

Image
Confused with Part 1  of the discussion? Let me explain further... (source: " the Monty's video ", a "perfect" sine wave output) (By the way, thanks to the discussion on head-fi , I noticed the Monty's video was removed  from the official website .   if you click on the "Digital Show & Tell" link on the web site, you'll get the following: Hmm... why it was removed from the official site? Did someone find out it is mis-leading?  The YouTube copy of the same video was uploaded to the FLStudio channel by someone else. Probably they need to ask someone to remove it and they forgot. update: one fellow member in head-fi found out the video is somehow still available in the  offical site domain  However, it is not accessible from the of the main article ) As I expected, I got quite a lot of "strong" feedbacks from other people in various on-line discussions. Most of these are in the form of bullying-like argument except the one I found o...

Is pseudo science really having zero tolerance on critical thinking? Magic! Now you don't see it!

Image
Magic! Now you don't see it !   Background for our discussion: 1. As stated in " why I start my blog ",  I created my account (@sunjam) in Audio Science Forum (ASR ) for my journey in the Audio Science World on 19 March 2024. 2. I saw a lot of fun and inspiring topics in ASR 3. Meanwhile, I noticed the wrong belief (i.e. the claim) that " Hi-Res is useless " ( statement 1 ) were being promoted by a lot of ASR members (including "Major Contributors", "Donors", "Sponsor", "Industrial Insider") to the people who question the claim 4. Most of these supporters claim "statement 1" is " factual ". They emphasized that there are a lot of objective tests / measurements supporting such claim. For example, this is the  paper  (from Journal of the Audio Engineering Socieity) they used for the claim. (This blog explain why the paper does not support statement 1) 5. Some of these supporters even state th...

Let Richard Feynman helps you to understand what's Hi-Res music

Image
Richard Feynman: "Let me tell you something..." Do you know who is Richard Feynman ?  I bet most people know him as a Nobel Prize winner in Physics . Do you know he is also a great educator too? There is something known as The Feynman Learning Technique Basically, what he means is that: Step 1: Pretend to teach it to a child The truth is,  if you can’t clearly and simply define the words and terms you are using, you don’t really know what you’re talking about . Writing helps you think because it gives you nowhere to hide Step 2: Identify gaps in your explanation Identifying gaps in your knowledge—where you forget something important, aren’t able to explain it, or simply have trouble thinking of how variables interact—is a critical part of the learning process. Step 3. Organize and simplify Organize them into a narrative that you can tell from beginning to end. Step 4: Transmit (optional) If you really want to be sure of your understanding, run it past someone. (my add: W...

Pseudo Science vs Science? "They are the same but different!"

Image
Pseudo Science vs Science? "They are the same but different!" After a few more rounds of discussions with different people on the internet. It looks to me that the difference is still not clear to most people. Let's see if I can do it better this time: What is pseudo science claim?  If you use “ 1+1=2 ” to justify something like “ earth is flat ”, these kind of claims are pseudo science claim. Do you agree? For example, let’s look at  one  of the infamous pseudo claims in ASR: they claim “Hi-Res is useless” (aka “earth is flat” in my analogy above) by stating the fact that like “you won’t be able to hear higher than 22k Hz unless you are a  Gray Moth ” (aka “1+1=2”). To make it clear: they claim "you cannot hear frequency higher than 22k Hz" (a fact) == implies =>  "Hi-Res music is useless"  Do you consider the above deduction is based on logical deductive reasoning ? Do you see the same ( wrong ) logical reasoning (for the "flat earth...
